Photo courtesy of METCA Teri Jones was one of three Workforce Education Innovators recognized by Florida College Access Network at the 2019 FCAN Summit. This follow-up story highlights Jones’ work as a community leader helping to address a chronic shortage of healthcare workers by providing comprehensive support for low-income adults looking to transition into the in-demand healthcare field. Teri Jones and the leadership team at Macedonia Education Technology and Career Academy (METCA) are helping serve the talent pipeline needs of Brevard County. In 2017, Jones spearheaded the creation of the Elderly Compassionate Care-METCA program, which provides assistance and scholarship funds to low-income adults looking for entry-level healthcare training in the home health aide (HHA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), and licensed practical nursing (LPN) career fields. METCA is the only resource of its type to provide targeted and hands-on supportive assistance for getting into healthcare careers, a field with critical shortages. She started by coordinating recruitment fairs for potential program participants, with support from CareerSource Brevard, Goodwill Job Industries, Eastern Florida State College, Brevard Nursing Academy, Keiser University, and lots of volunteers. “I refer to our recruitment fairs as ‘casting calls.’ At these events, I explain how we are going to support our participants by serving as counselors, mentors and advocates while facilitating their access to scholarship funds for their training,” said Jones, who added that a partnership with CareerSource Brevard in November 2017 resulted in a grant for scholarships funds. Jones also helps selected candidates navigate the college application process.

... Colleges & SchoolsCollege of EducationDepartmentsACCESS. ACCESS. ACCESS ... Terri Miles. Associate Director of Student Services 334-670-5866 · tzmiles@troy ... HomeAcademicsColleges & SchoolsCollege of EducationDepartmentsACCESS ACCESS Virtual Learning (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators and Students Statewide), is an initiative of the Alabama Department of Education.  Its primary goal is to provide high quality instruction and improve student achievement through virtual learning opportunities. With over 120 classes offered, ACCESS provides the entire high school curriculum at no cost to Alabama public schools. There are 30,000 students across the state of Alabama who are currently taking classes through ACCESS. The goal of ACCESS Virtual Learning is to create equity by offering digital distance educational opportunities to all Alabama public high school students. The mission of ACCESS Virtual Learning is to provide an infrastructure that delivers equitable, quality learning opportunities for all citizens. The State of Alabama provides equal access to high-quality instruction to improve student achievement through distance learning. In 2004. Governor Bob Riley created a task force to address issues regarding rural public schools who were not being able to hire additional teachers in order to offer more electives. The solution was to create a virtual learning environment that blended traditional and online/video conferencing resources. The outcome of this task force later created  ACCESS (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide). The program was broken into three regional support centers (supervised by ALSDE in Montgomery, AL) to hire, train, evaluate, and support ACCESS teachers as well as be support outlet for schools utilizing the program. The three support centers were divided by the northern, central, and southern regions of the state and housed in Madison City Schools, University of Alabama and Troy University.
