Built during the California Gold Rush, the city had several names before its incorporation in 1850, including "Tuleberg,” “Gas City” and “Mudville.” It was ultimately named Stockton in honor of Commodore Robert Stockton, who was instrumental in capturing California during the Mexican-American War. Stockton’s seaport access caused it to grow quickly as a gateway to California’s Central Valley and beyond. Stockton grew steadily throughout the next century. Today, it is a center of art, creativity, industry, and abundant natural beauty, and a thriving LGBTQ community as well. Stockton is home to the largest inland seaport in California. Community Affiliations. Stockton Branch is affiliated with many community organizations, including the San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women, ... To commemorate women’s history month in March, local high school students write about the achievements of a woman who is particularly important to them. Entry forms and fliers with the criteria are available to English teachers early in the school year. Authors of winning essays receive monetary awards at our March branch meeting, and their essays are published in The Record. Stockton Branch is affiliated with many community organizations, including the San Joaquin County Commission on the Status of Women, League of Women Voters, Stockton Women’s Network, Edison Health Center, Stagg Healthy Start Program, Planned Parenthood, PFLAG-Stockton, The LINKS, Inc., Stockton, Children’s Museum of Stockton, St. Mary’s Interfaith Dining Room, Expanding Your Horizons Conference, Stockton Chamber of Commerce, and Library Literacy Program. Our branch competes annually in the Stockton Library Trivia Bee. This group of branch members provides information and/or develops projects on timely educational equity issues such as gender equity, sexual harassment in the schools, and curriculum restructuring. Consistent with AAUW’s public policy principles, branch members contact elected representatives and the media, participate in nonpartisan election activities, and sponsor issue forums. Through the national office of AAUW, you can become a Two-Minute Activist.
