(WDBJ) - The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause in the fatal September 17 apartment complex fire, according to Roanoke County Fire and Rescue. The cause of the Peters Creek Apartments fire was deemed accidental and caused by improperly disposed smoking materials, the fire marshal says. Firefighters say no charges are being pursued. “Roanoke County Fire and Rescue would like to remind everyone that if you smoke to please be careful with where you dispose of those materials. Also, during this fire prevention month, please remember the importance of having a family fire escape plan to include things like calling 9-1-1 from outside your home and to never go back inside a burning building once you are out,” said firefighters in a Wednesday statement. The apartment complex fire resulted in $750,000 in damages, according to Roanoke County Fire & Rescue. The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire originated on the second-floor balcony. The fire injured two residents as well as a firefighter. The firefighter and one resident were released from the hospital the next morning, but the other resident suffered severe burns. Family identified the man to WDBJ7 as Lloyd “Buck” Hall. Hall was flown to the burn unit at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond. Roanoke County Fire & Rescue responded to the fire at the Peters Creek Apartments on the 7200 block of South Barrens Road at 9:30 p.m. Firefighters say they found heavy black smoke upon arrival and extinguished the fire in an hour.
