Feb 28, 2013 ... Q- does drilling a single hole thru the platters destroy ALL the data??? ... The sound files on that page describe exactly what I experienced. This post is more than 5 years old HELP!!! XPS 8500 Nightmare - .cannot reinstall Dell Windows 8 (with DVD) on new hard drive. I could really use some help here. See this. How do I get out of this mess?? What is the procedure for walking in a unit to Dell Canada for repair? How do I protect my confidential data? Will Dell repair my two month old machine if i walk in without their OEM hard drive??  I hope to they do. What if it were stolen? I don't care about the cost and don't want anything for free, I just want to get my system working so I can rebuild it. Sorry for the formatting of this post , I am only on an iPad. I was wondering about using a magnet. Did a quick search and found someone that used a low cost magnet to erase a working drive. Here's the link: superuser.com/.../how-can-i-wipe-a-broken-hard-disk-drive-before-sending-it-back-to-the-manufactur My enclosure is actually both USB as esata....but does the X8500 have an external esata port ???? Perhaps my XPS 9100 does. But if it didn't work when connected to the internal sata, I don't think external would be any different. Will try it though after Dell is done  and before I pay them for not returning the drive. Hmmm not so easy to un-screw the 'star' type screws... I gather I need a "Torx screw driver"..  bought a cheap set at home depot.....the smallest one was T-9 which got the case off... ...but I cannot get the platters off as the platter screws are smaller, perhaps T8 or T5. Where does one find T8 or T5 torx bits or screw drivers given that HomeDepot didn't have them??

XPS 8940, I should have looked closer before buying I am happy (currently) with my Dell XPS 8940.  i7-10700 CPU @ 2.90GHz 2.90 GHz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super (8GB) However, it just dawned on me that I will never be able to upgrade the GPU because of the configuration of the PSU! And it better be a short GPU at that! That is, say in a couple of years from now I want to upgrade the GPU, which will most likely require a PSU upgrade as well. No one makes a PSU in THAT shape. What was Dell thinking? And better yet, what was I thinking!? @tjfrankus15    What was Dell thinking? And better yet, what was I thinking!? Unfortunately . . . you will be limited to a 500 watt PSU     It is not so much the PSU shape . . . but the Dell proprietary power connectors. There is no 3rd party PSU that has a 6-pin mobo power connector . . . amongst other Dell proprietary nonsense. However, I'm pretty sure the XPS 8940 supports a full length graphics card . . . perhaps up to 10.5 inches in length.  If you are looking for improved performance for your current configuration, consider looking through this forum for additional cooling options. Thanks for the reply, Dell630i. Is the 6-pin mobo power connector the cord that connects the PSU to the motherboard? Again? What is the thinking behind that? Like I alluded to, I am happy with my XPS - for now, but just thinking down the line. I had my 8900 for almost 7 years, and had to replace the GPU about 3 years in, which required an upgraded PSU as well, and this was no problem.

Nov 16, 2020 ... Are folks drilling into the case to mount front fans? Thanks for any pointers! Blue Book. I have this problem too (0). Reply. Responses(64). Aurora R11, front fan replacement Great to be back in the gaming PC scene again.  I've recently purchased an Aurora R11 with RTX 3080, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe.  I've decided to replace the front and top fans with the Corsair ML 120 after reading about issues with Noctua fans and BIOS. I went to replace the front fan (easy to remove) and found that there aren't any threaded mount points since the fan is a clip in.  Are folks drilling into the case to mount front fans? Noctua NF-F12 iPPC , 4-Pin, 3000 RPM (120mm, Black)? I ordered 2 because they seem to be going fast. No Idea if either works. Neither is supported by Dell. So the fan is standard wiring 7MF05 No Idea what the black plastic holder part number is. DATA1225B2G PS02 AVC 12025 120mm Fan 4-Wire 12V 1.02A 4300RPM 148.9CFM cooling fan Metal top bracket says 7M0F5 fan and  13P1-4ZN0201 Also note new units now have all black wires so you cant tell how they hookup.  Blue Yellow Red Black is standard. 4 wire fans fit fine on 3 wire headers with the blue pwm not attached to anything. Sometimes the Yellow wire is white. Seem to be standard not Dell Wonky Is it possible to buy an extra "black plastic mounting bracket that clips into the front chassis" from Dell/Alienware? I am having a hard time finding this.  I’ve had the same issue, I installed the same Corsair fans, 2 at the front. I only get 56% but I’m guessing that’s them maxed out from the conversion of the oem fan. I just think commander centre isn’t calibrated to them.
