(Photo by Leah Harris) Albert Holmes grew up without either of his parents.  His mother and father both died when he was young, forcing Holmes to take care of himself and get a job when he was a teenager. Holmes eventually married and had seven children, but later divorced. “Even though I didn’t stay with their mother, I didn’t divorce the children,” he said. It was important for him to be present in his children’s lives, he said. As president and CEO of My Father’s House Inc., Holmes helps other men engage in their children’s lives. The nonprofit, founded in 1999 as part of a statewide fatherhood initiative, works with mostly with non-custodial parents — the parent without primary custody of their child. My Father’s House serves mostly African-American men, but single parents of all backgrounds can participate in programming. “Non-custodial parents still want to have communication with their children,” said Holmes, who previously worked in law enforcement at prisons. My Father’s House, at 6115 N. Teutonia Ave., equips men with the skills needed to be better fathers. Mark Bogan doesn’t have primary custody of any of his five children. He is divorced but said he makes time see his children and be active in their lives. “Understanding your kids’ wants and needs is the most important part of being a father,” he said.

My Fathers House ... A prison reentry nonprofit that provides transitional housing, job placement assistance, life-skills training, and a supportive community to ... At My Father’s House, we empower men on parole to lead whole and productive lives by providing transitional housing, job placement assistance, life-skills training, and a community of support. My Father’s House serves a limited number of participants at a time, thereby providing each man with his own bedroom, human-centric case management, personalized job placement assistance, and life-skills training to aid in his successful reintegration into society. Each man reentering society has unique needs and challenges, requiring individualized support and attention to increase his chances of success. By managing reentry in smaller groups, participants can gradually adjust to life outside of prison and integrate into their communities more effectively. Our intensive case management approach ensures a low staff-to-client ratio, which has been proven effective based on our impact. We have a 100% success rate for housing the men upon graduation. None of our participants are homeless; and all leave the program with safe, affordable housing. In the area of employment, we have a 100% success rate among the men of working age and who’ve been in the program for at least three months. All the men who have been participants either came to us already employed or were placed in employment with the assistance of My Father’s House and retained employment for the 90 days of tracking and beyond. Most participants opt to go directly to the employment track, but some have chosen to also receive a certification to enhance their employment options. My Father’s House placed several men into industry-recognized credential-attainment programs since we began tracking this metric.
