News Sports Entertainment Lifestyle Advertise Obituaries eNewspaper Legals Still M.O.V.E.ing after 25 years - Marion Oaks Volunteer Eyes MARION OAKS - The Marion Oaks Volunteer Eyes crime watch program - known as M.O.V.E. - patrols four zones, or 230 miles, in the sprawling subdivision, the same as the group did 25 years ago when first organized. Only then, volunteers used their own cars and obtained other equipment through donations. Today those four zones, with several having to be redrawn, include many more streets and homes, with more on the way. As the community grows, the basic mission of M.O.V.E. remains the same - watching out for suspicious activity and alerting law enforcement. A recognition dinner tonight at the Marion Oaks Community Center will bring many M.O.V.E. volunteers back together to celebrate their work and thank them for a job well done. It's a job the current 39 volunteers, mostly retirees, take seriously each time they get behind the wheel of one of two crime watch vehicles or take a turn at the dispatcher's desk. Volunteers circulate throughout Marion Oaks several times a day, five days a week, typically in three hour shifts. "When you work a zone on a regular basis, you know any strange car or someone suspicious," said Cleveland Ford, M.O.V.E. president. "In residential areas we make sure everything is OK, no windows are broken if the owner is away." While not allowed to enter a home, anything out of order warrants notifying the dispatcher, who will call the sheriff's office to follow up.

Ford said residents like knowing there is a patrol like MOVE in the community. "I know there are good and bad people moving in, but if there was not the patrol, crime would get out of hand," she said. "I'd wonder why I relocated here from New York." The community's low rate of 2.9 crimes per 100 residents was recently touted by Marion County Sheriff Ed Dean during a Marion Oaks residents meeting as a reason many move to the local area. Ford and her neighbors were among the first in the county to learn from the sheriff that the county's crime rate is on the decline as he highlighted the latest crime statistics from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. According to the FDLE figures released Tuesday for 2005, the crime rate for unincorporated portion of Marion County was 2.53 crimes per 100 residents compared to the state average of 4.68. In a report card distributed throughout the audience, Dean compared Marion County to neighboring counties and those of comparable size to showcase the area's top ranking. "It comes down to the numbers and how you stack up with others and how much they are spending," he said.
