Starting points for a trip to discover Italy are: X (formerly Twitter): @ItalyinUS Language: cultivating heritage and enjoying the Italian lifestyle Data on the promotion of Italian language and culture collected by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in 2019 confirmed that the United States is, globally, the fourth largest country in terms of number of students of Italian – after Australia, Germany and France. Indeed, the U.S. counts 186,894 students, 71,165 of whom are university-level students of Italian. In 2016 the Modern Language Association (MLA) reported 56,743 students of Italian at U.S. universities, which means there was a 20% increase in student numbers. The latest Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education showed that in the 2021-2022 academic year Italy, with 30,610 American students, was the leading destination country for student tourism. This marks the second year in a row Italy has held that position. Among the reasons for this success are the presence in the United States of a large community of Italian descendants who wish to learn more about their heritage and the recognized link between the Italian language and culture and the function thereof as a gateway to the Italian lifestyle.

It completes the range of Italian institutions in Florida and in the South-East of the United States, flanking the Consulate General of Italy and the ICE Agency Office in Miami. The inauguration of the new Italian Cultural Institute is a new stage in the process of strengthening Italian cultural diplomacy in the world, illustrated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, during the Stati Generali della Diplomazia Culturale held last October in Florence. On that occasion, Minister Tajani had announced initiatives aimed at “implementing – thanks to cultural diplomacy – a great process of internationalisation and Italian investment abroad, based not only on the sale of goods but also on the export of cultural services.” The Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy, Alessandro De Pedys, and the Consul General in Miami, Michele Mistò, cut the ribbon at the inauguration of the Institute, wanted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) to further strengthen – with an all-round approach – promotional activities in the United States.
