Tuning Education For The 21st Century! Creative Commons – Public Domain (Front page of original music 1907) I have spent my last couple weeks researching 21st Century Skills, reflecting on my teaching, remembering my own education, and even pondering a little bit of John Dewey. In the process of this reflection I was reminded of an early post from my blogging career. Hope it gives you an opportunity to think! Please, enjoy and share. – Mike (twitter at mjgormans) Many people suggest that school really hasn’t changed through the years. I invite you to take a trip back in time and listen to the song “School Days” written by Will Cobb and Gus Edwards. Be sure to read about the song’s history. Also listen to the original 1907 version sung byByron G. Harlon on both cylinders and 78 rpm recordings. The Cylinder Restoration Project is an interesting visit and could stimulate some interesting lessons. My point; times really have changed, but has instructional transformation kept up with the pace of this change? I’ll let you decide. Below, I have added on to those original verses in order to help us reflect on changes made, not made, or still to be considered. Feel free to sing along with the newly created lyrics and enjoy a moment of reflection. Maybe someone in 2110 will discover this posting and reminisce! After all, these are the good old days!
Aug 25, 2020 ... School days, school days, good old golden rules days. Reading and ... Not sure why but he asked me if I wanted to fight after school and I said ... Remember those good ole’ school days? School days, school days, good old golden rules days. Reading and Riting and Rithmatic, taught to the tune of a hickory stick! I may be dating myself there, but that goofy song has stuck in my head all these years. With schools now open or opening across the state and nation, it brought back some memories of my early days in academia. Every year in mid-August or so, my mom would take me and my two brothers shopping for back to school clothes and supplies. It was fun and painful at the same time. For one thing, my two brothers and I were typical boys growing at atypical rates. Every year, my dad would offer sage words of advice on picking out school clothes. With our feet growing by leaps and bounds and the summer boots or black Converse high tops worn to a frazzle, he would complain that our feet were growing too fast. You boys, said he, should just go down to the livestock yard, kick a couple of bulls in the rear and walk home. Then he would laugh his laugh. The laughter would continue when he told us instead of going to the department store for shirts and pants we should just go visit Omar the Tent Maker. Now I don’t think there was an Omar the Tent Maker in Billings but my dad was my dad and he was paying the bills. Most years we were also allowed to pick out a pair of “dress” shoes. For me that meant either penny loafers or black and white saddle shoes. If you were a rascal, like I was told I was, you would put a dime in the slot on the penny loafers.

I was born on the Island but our family left before I entered school. I started school at Sultan in the fall of 1941, and then we moved to Cashmere where I finished the first grade. After a summer in a cabin on Lake Wenatchee, (my Mom said I kept asking her when the tide was going to go out), we were back on Whidbey where I entered the second grade in the fall of 1942. From then on through high school I was at Langley. My two older brothers, Bob and Jim, had started grade school at Langley in the white wooden building that was later replaced by a new brick building in 1941. My younger sister Nora also attended school at Langley. We all graduated from Langley High School, which now houses Island Dance. Growing up on South Whidbey was very unique. Most of us had either been born on the Island, or had been there long enough to have deep roots in the community. Families were tied together through school activities, various social gatherings, or just as neighbors that helped each other out. Our class always seemed to average around 30 students. Most of us were together from the time I entered the second grade until we graduated high school. Before my time, there were several small schools scattered around the south end. To name a few: Bay View, Brickyard School, Deer Lake, Ingleside, Intervale, Island School, Langley, Mutiny Bay, and Saratoga.
