IN THE 80'S, IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY art hung in all-white rooms surrounded by furniture -- beige or black -- that didn't dare distract from the walls. Ellen Kern, a private art dealer, was well aware of this cliche because that's how she used to live. A small dynamo of a woman, Kern still wears the requisite black-on-black, but now her East Side apartment has been transformed by color -- spring green, royal blue, raw salmon -- and furniture with a curve of its own. In place of the bland monumentality of leather and chrome, a suave elegance prevails, thanks in large part to the preponderance of French and Italian classics from the 40's and 50's. Now very fashionable, this furniture was hard to find just a few years ago, so Kern and her designer, Thad Hays, went on a pilgrimage to Paris, where they tracked down pieces by the best-known names in the field -- Jean Royere, Jules Leleu, Rene Prou -- and brought them home. For Kern, who wanted an apartment that looked as if a woman lived there and owned it, French 40's was a revelation. It had expressive lines and a distinctly modern sensibility, without the hard-edged masculinity of more industrial styles. Against works by David Salle, Eric Fischl, Francesco Clemente and Lucian Freud, the furniture introduced just the right degree of irreverence and wit to art that shares some of the same qualities.
