AARP AARP States Virginia Health & Wellbeing The Many Benefits of the Chesapeake Camelot Community Center By Natalie Ferrara , February 18, 2020 10:17 AM It is not only a new year, but a new decade, and a great time to reflect on new changes. Is your health where you would like it to be? Is your doctor recommending more activity? Camelot Community Center offers many opportunities for seniors, and if you are 55+, membership is free. Brandon Lopez, a Recreation Lead for the center said “We offer one of the newest fitness rooms, of all the Chesapeake Community Centers.” It includes two ellipticals, two stationary bikes, two treadmills, a Hoist Fitness Multi-Station, and free weights. A ballet barre and padded exercise mats are available near a DVD player, so he encourages you to bring in your own exercise videos to work out to. If you enjoy dancing, Brandon suggests you Dosey Doe to their current Monday line dancing night, with the "Camelot Soul Steppers," which meets from 6:30pm to 8:00pm for $3. The facility also offers a game room with billiard/bumper pool tables and foosball. If you are interested in hosting your own event, two rooms are available for rental; one with full capacity of 120 with a kitchen, and the other room holds a maximum of 25. Call 757-485-7400 for resident and non-resident rates. How else can AARP members and seniors take steps toward healthy lifestyle changes this year? Brandon recommends the Rokeby Community Center, which specifically develops its activities for its senior community. Currently, in addition to Zumba classes, they are holding smart snacking workshops. Take some time, reassess your food intake, and discover how you can make some improvements in your eating choices.
