IN 1958, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a curved stainless-steel serving counter for the cafe at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan. But it wasn't built until last year. Two and a half weeks ago, the gleaming 35-foot-long arc, whose base is concave, was installed as one of the final touches in the museum's total renovation. Planning the renovation, the museum asked the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, Ariz., to look for the original drawing, and it was found in 1990. The counter was made by the K-T Corporation in Shelbyville, Ind., metal fabricators in the aerospace, bus and trucking industries. "We could not find a contractor willing or able to fabricate a double curving stainless-steel piece among the normal kitchen or ornamental metal contractors," said Jacob Alspector, a senior associate at Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects, which renovated the museum. "But with the end of the cold war, we thought we could find a defense contractor who could make double curves like they do for planes." The cost of the counter: $30,000. The museum is on Fifth Avenue at 89th Street.
